A lengthy, live-action trailer has appeared on YouTube teasing something related to Mortal Kombat. The nearly eight-minute-long teaser was uploaded by an account named "MortalKombatRebirth" yesterday, and stars Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Lateef Crowder, and Matt Mullins.

The video follows Captain Jackson Briggs (White) as he interviews a mysterious assassin about a series of grisly murders. Classic MK characters like Johnny Cage (Mullins), Baraka (Crowder), Sonya Blade (Ryan), Shang Tsung, Scorpion, Sub Zero, and Reptile all make appearances.

At first glance it looks like the setup for a new Mortal Kombat movie, but we're leaning more towards this trailer leading up to the next Mortal Kombat videogame. Warner Bros. Interactive seems keen on using live-action sequences to advertise their games as of late (see the recent F.E.A.R. 3 trailers), and the lack of any prior buzz about an MK flick makes a movie sound pretty unlikely. Seriously, when was the last time you saw a trailer for a movie based on a videogame license without hearing about it three years ahead of time?

Series co-creator Ed Boon has repeatedly teased that the developers at Warner Bros. Games Chicago (formerly Midway Games) are hard at work on Mortal Kombat 9. We've even heard whisperings that the next MK could debut at E3 next week. We should find out soon enough whether or not this trailer has any connection with those rumors.
