Crysis 2 dev denies quality-of-life complaints

Quality-of-life issues are a long-standing sore point for those working in the game industry. In years past, Electronic Arts, Rockstar San Diego, and Team Bondi have all had their reputations hurt by anonymous whistleblowers going public with allegations of unreasonable demands and working conditions. Crytek was added to the list last week, as a Tumblr blog titled "hire and fire crytek" accused the developer of treating its employees "as disposable pieces of meat to be discarded at will."

The blog described a deteriorating atmosphere in the Frankfurt studio responsible for Crysis 2, saying management had been unlawfully firing employees and forcing out senior employees who they thought could be capably replaced by cheaper, less experienced talent. The blog also said former employees have successfully sued the company "and won settlements."

Crytek cofounder Avni Yerli addressed the claims in an interview with Develop yesterday, calling them "completely misleading."

"One thing that will always be the same is that Crytek respects and values its employees very highly, and equally--that's very important. Whether it's an intern, whether it's a director, it doesn't change; everyone is important," Yerli said, adding, "It is very distressing for us to think that an individual thinks we have been treating them unfairly. It's very disappointing."

As for the legal settlements, Yerli questioned who came out ahead in the deals and dismissed their existence as evidence of wrongdoing.

"Well in Germany it is common sense, if you release someone, sometimes they get bad legal advice and basically think they can make unreasonable requests like huge severance packages," Yerli said. "What we offered them they clearly didn't like but it was more than legally required. So they go to court and ask for much more, but in the end they end up getting less or what we offered in the first place, and just go through the pain [of the whole legal process]. 'Won' the lawsuits isn't the right term. I don't want to make glory out of this. We are not proud of 'winning.' This is something sad that happened between us and people we used to work with. We haven't been found to have unlawfully fired these people, but we don't want to go to court with our co-workers either."

Cloud Gaming Service OnLive Gets PC, Mac Release Date

Steve Perlman's ambitious cloud gaming service, OnLive, will begin to roll out on June 17 for PC and Mac, giving gamers in the continental U.S. a chance to see first-hand what on-demand, instant-play videogames are all about.

Perlman, founder and CEO of the company and service that bear the same name, said in a statement that the official launch will happen at this year's E3, opening OnLive to those living in the 48 contiguous states. For an announced price of $14.95 per month (not including purchase or rental of games), the service will provide instant access to a library of popular titles and new releases from a number of publishers, including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, 2K, THQ, and Warner Bros. For example, the titles currently listed under OnLive's Featured Games section are Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed II, Borderlands, Metro 2033, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, and Dragon Age: Origins.

Via a browser plug-in and high-speed Internet connection, Perlman promises even the most basic computers will be able to run high-end games. "This marks a huge milestone for both OnLive and the interactive entertainment landscape as a whole, changing the way that video games are developed, marketed, accessed and played," Perlman said. "We are opening the door to incredible experiences for gamers and enormous opportunities for developers and publishers."

No word yet on the release of the console version of OnLive, but Perlman said more details would be provided at E3. The company did announce a pre-registration promotion, offering a three-month free introductory period to the first 25,000 people that sign up.

Superman Returns DVD to Include Exclusive Cheat Code

Electronic Arts has drawn some fire for its unconventional way of distributing cheat codes lately, and now the videogame publishing giant is trying a different approach. Gamers who purchase Superman Returns on DVD will gain access to an exclusive cheat code for the Superman Returns videogame. This code will allow you to play as Bizarro for as long as you want. When you play as Bizarro, you'll get to wreck havoc throughout Metropolis and make life miserable for its citizens.

The cheat will work for all console versions of Superman Returns: The Videogame. You do not have to have the DVD movie to use the cheat, so if you don't want a copy of the movie, you can always get your buddy to buy the DVD and just tell you what the code is. Since this is the case, we see this as more of a cross-promotional move rather than some sleazy ploy to get you to buy both the movie and the game.

PlayStation 3 owners have been dying to get a chance to play Valve's zombie franchise Left 4 Dead for some time. But now it looks like there's reason to start holding out hope.

While the studio has had harsh things to say about Sony's console in the past, Valve appears to be finally be warming up to the idea of developing for it.

Left 4 Dead writer Chet Faliszek recently told Edge the developer has been cautious with its approach to supporting the platform, but said he believes it'll happen eventually.

"Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way," said Faliszek. "But we'll look at it, and I'm sure down the road we'll do it."

The PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box, released in 2007, was outsourced to Electronic Arts while the Xbox 360 and PC versions were done internally at Valve's studio in Bellevue, Washington.

We contacted Valve for additional comments and will update this story if we hear back.
